1.Bhutan plans a $500 million fund for crypto mining in the Himalayas
Bhutan’s investment arm and Nasdaq-listed company Bitdeer Technologies Group plan to seek investors for a fund worth up to $500 million that will be used to develop green crypto mining in the Himalayan kingdom. Mining is the least risky way for Bhutan to tap crypto opportunities and for now the nation will focus on Bitcoin.
2.PEPE token soars to $500M market cap as meme coin fever grips crypto traders
PEPE, the token that sprouted out of the "pepe the frog" meme, has rocketed to a $502 million market cap following a 2,100% rise since it was issued last month. PEPE has around 75,000 holders with several wallets – excluding centralized exchanges – holding in excess of $5 million worth of the tokens.
3.Ethereum's high gas fees see users flock to EVM-compatible chains
Usage of Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible blockchains hit a new all-time high last week, thanks to consistently high gas fees on Ethereum. Average Ethereum transaction fees, known as gas fees, have increased by over 250% since the beginning of the year to around $9 per transaction from about $2.50 per transaction in December.
4.White House pushes for punitive tax on crypto mining
U.S. President Joe Biden is looking to impose a punitive tax on crypto mining operations for the “harms they impose on society,” the White House’s Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) argued in an online post. The blog entry made the case for a U.S. tax equal to 30% of a mining firm’s energy costs – an unusual industry-specific penalty that could threaten the profits of such businesses.
5.Crypto companies plead with UK regulators not to follow the US
In the eyes of some American lawmakers and businesses, the U.S. is stifling innovation with its sometimes confusing and often heavy-handed approach to regulating the crypto space. Web3 companies are hoping the U.K. won’t go the same way. a16z, the crypto-focused division of VC giant Andreessen Horowitz, asked the U.K. Treasury to take a more “nuanced” approach to regulation, adding that “the U.S. approach is not one that the U.K. should consider adopting.”

De investeringstak van Bhutan en het op Nasdaq genoteerde bedrijf Bitdeer Technologies Group zoekt investeerders voor een fonds met een waarde tot $500 miljoen. Dit fonds wordt gebruikt om een groene vorm van crypto mining te ontwikkelen. Mining is de minst risicovolle manier voor Bhutan om cryptokansen aan te boren en voorlopig zal het land zich concentreren op Bitcoin.

4.Witte Huis wilt bestraffende belasting op crypto mining
De Amerikaanse president Joe Biden wil een bestraffende belasting heffen op crypto mining voor de ‘schade die ze aan de samenleving toebrengen’, betoogde de Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) van het Witte Huis in een online bericht. Het blogbericht pleitte voor een Amerikaanse belasting die gelijk staat aan 30% van de energiekosten van een mining bedrijf. Het is een ongebruikelijke sectorspecifieke boete die de winst van deze bedrijven kan bedreigen.
5.Crypto bedrijven pleiten bij Britse regelgevers om niet de VS te volgen
In de ogen van sommige Amerikaanse wetgevers en bedrijven verstikt de VS innovatie, dit doen ze door hun soms verwarrende en vaak hardhandige benadering van het reguleren van crypto. Web3 bedrijven hopen dat het VK niet dezelfde kant op zal gaan. Zo heeft a16z (de cryptogerichte divisie van VC reus Andreessen Horowitz) het Britse ministerie van Financiën gevraagd om een meer ‘genuanceerde’ aanpak van regulering. Hieraan werd toegevoegd dat ‘de Amerikaanse aanpak niet iets is dat het VK zou moeten overwegen.’
