1.Ethereum Testnet Processes First ETH Staking Withdrawals
An Ethererum test network (testnet) successfully simulated withdrawals of staked ether (ETH) for the first time, bringing the second-biggest blockchain yet another step closer to its historic transition to a fully featured proof-of-stake network.

2.UK's Bank of England launches digital pound project as 'new form' of money
The Bank of England, the UK's central bank, launched its long-awaited digital pound project, pitching the potential to create a new payment system and form of money. The potential digital currency would be issued solely by the central bank, with households and businesses able to hold the currency in a digital wallet accessible via smartphones or cards, a consultation document said.

3.NFT Market Share Battle Ramps Up Between OpenSea and Blur
OpenSea has been the frontrunner of the NFT marketplaces since its launch in December 2017. It continues to dominate the NFT scene: Last week it had over 34,000 ETH in trading volume worth some $56 million, according to blockchain data analytics platform Nansen. But competing marketplace Blur has gained considerable momentum among JPEG slingers since its debut in October.

4.Crypto theft: North Korea-linked hackers stole $1.7b in 2022
North Korea-backed hackers stole $1.7bn (£1.4bn) of crypto in 2022, says blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis. This nearly quadruples the country's previous record for cryptocurrency theft - $429m in 2021. Experts have said the country, facing heavy sanctions, is turning to crypto theft to fund its nuclear arsenal.

5.Bankrupt FTX exchange asks for its political donations to be returned
The bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange firm founded by disgraced entrepreneur Sam Bankman-Fried is demanding refunds of donations made to politicians before its spectacular collapse last year. In “confidential messages” sent to numerous political figures and action groups, FTX and its debtors are backing up their demand for the return of money donated by Bankman-Fried prior to the company’s bankruptcy in November with the threat of legal action.

Een Ethererum testnetwerk (testnet) simuleerde voor het eerst opnames van staked ether (ETH) met succes. Hiermee komt de op één na grootste blockchain weer een stap dichterbij de overgang naar een volledig functioneel proof-of-stake-netwerk.

2.Bank of England lanceert digitale pond project als 'nieuwe vorm' van geld
De Bank of England (de centrale bank van het VK) lanceerde het langverwachte project voor digitale ponden. Hiermee pitchen ze de mogelijkheid om een nieuw betalingssysteem en een nieuwe vorm van geld te creëren. De potentiële digitale valuta zou uitsluitend door de centrale bank worden uitgegeven. Huishoudens en bedrijven kunnen de valuta in een digitale wallet bewaren die toegankelijk is via smartphones of kaarten, werd er beschreven in een gepubliceerd consultatiedocument.

3.De strijd om NFT-marktaandeel loopt op tussen OpenSea en Blur
OpenSea is de koploper van NFT marktplaatsen sinds hun lancering in december 2017. Sindsdien domineer het de NFT landschap: zo had het bedrijf vorige week meer dan 34.000 ETH aan handelsvolume ($56 miljoen) volgens blockchain data-analyseplatform Nansen. Echter de concurrerende marktplaats Blur wint aan kracht sinds hun debuut in oktober bij zogenaamde ‘JPEG-slingers’.

4.Crypto diefstal: hackers die aan Noord-Korea gekoppeld zijn, hebben $1,7 miljard gestolen in 2022
Door Noord-Korea gesteunde hackers hebben in 2022 voor $1,7 miljard aan crypto gestolen, zegt blockchain analysebedrijf Chainalysis. Dit is bijna 4x zoveel als het vorige record van het land voor diefstal van crypto (namelijk $429 miljoen in 2021). Experts zeggen dat het land geconfronteerd wordt met zware sancties, waardoor het zich tot cryptodiefstal wendt om het nucleaire arsenaal te financieren.

5.Failliete exchange FTX vraagt om teruggave van politieke donaties
De failliete crypto exchange van Sam Bankman-Fried eist terugbetaling van donaties aan politici voordat het vorig jaar instortte. In "vertrouwelijke berichten" die naar politieke figuren en actiegroepen zijn gestuurd, eisen FTX en hun debiteuren het geld terug dat door Bankman-Fried is geschonken en dreigen ze met juridische stappen. De schenkingen vonden plaats voor het faillissement van het bedrijf in november.
